Frequently Asked Question's

Are the events held on public land?

Yes, Hubbards Carbon Crusade Events are all held on publicland, so you can enjoy the fruits of your labour in years to come. The scenery and views are simply stunning for every one of the events.

How fit do I have to be?

This event caters for all levels of fitness - from poor to superfit. At 8-11km in distance, with 6 weeks training most people should be able to walk these courses. All event courses are basically flat.

This event is not timed as the emphasis is not on winning - it's on planting, with walking/running the means to travel to the planting sites. We welcome all levels of fitness so please don’t shy away – the Hubbards Carbon Crusade is all about PARTICIPATION.

I would like to walk and run. Which section should I enter?

You should enter the running section.

How much does it cost to enter?

$35.00 per Individual (18+ years)
$15.00 per Teenager (13-17 years)
$60.00 for family concession (2 adults, 1-4 children).

Do I get a prize?

Every participant receives a $15.00 voucher for Icebreaker clothing, which can be redeemed at any Bivouac Outdoor store in New Zealand. There are Bivouac stores in all cities where Hubbards Carbon Crusade events are taking place.

Where does the money go?

The Hubbards Carbon Crusade is hosted by the Keep Growing Charitable Trust (under application), and is not for profit. $2.00 for every entry is donated to the Sir Peter Blake Charitable Trust (Auckland and Hamilton events), and in the case of the Christchurch event, this $2.00 is donated to Trees for Canterbury. All other revenue is used to cover the extensive costs to stage a national event series, such as staff, promotion, logistics, hire equipment, traffic management, travel, communications equipment, insurance, GST etc.

Can I push a buggy with a child in it?

Yes you can, although some parts of the courses are a little bumpy and will require caution. There are some very moderate hills in some courses, so wrist safety straps should be worn at all times by the person puching the buggy.

Will the trees be protected once they're planted?

Yes they will. We have partnered with Manukau, Hamilton and Christchurch City Council's to ensure that all trees planted are subject to a 3 year maintenance program after planting. This will ensure all trees are given the best chance of survival.

How long will the run/walk take?

We expect the fastest runner to complete the challenge in 45 minutes, and the least fastest walker to take around 2.5 hours. This will vary between courses as they range in length.

Will there be water stations and toilets on the course?

Please bring your own water of you wish to have some available as there are no water stations on the course. This is doe to the fact that they're only 8-11km long. There will be two portaloos available for use at the planting sites (approximately half way around the courses).

What sort of trees will be planted?

All trees will be New Zealand natives. Actual species will depend on each individual planting site. Common types that will be used include Cabbage Trees, Manuka, Kanuka and Flax.

I’ve never planted a tree before. How will I know what to do?

It’s very simple. You will be given information prior to the event showing you what to do, and we will also talk through this in the race briefing. Otherwise, feel free to do some Internet research.

How many entries are available?

There are a maximum of 500 entries availble per event, so don't delay.
